The original ABA was founded in 1967, competing with the well-established National Basketball Association, until the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. The ABA produced such all-stars as Dr. J, George Gervin, George McGinnis, and Cornelius "Connie" Hawkins. The league currently has over 100 teams for the 2012 season.

A direct mail program was created to promote the sale of season tickets. The program was well received locally, but not developed and distributed throughout the league.
